NatureKids BC Job Alert! Our Executive Director, Louise Pedersen, is moving on to a new position with the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC, and we’re now searching for the right person to pick up the daily strategic and operational leadership and continue to move the organization forward.

The successful candidate will join a team of competent and passionate staff, an inspired and engaged board of directors, an incredible group of volunteers who lead our community-based family clubs, and with a strategic planning process underway this really is an exciting time to get involved with one of BC’s most awesome organizations (at least in our humble opinion!). Here are the details:

Reports to: NatureKids BC Board of Directors

Salary: $33 Hour

About NatureKids BC:

NatureKids BC (NKBC) is a registered charity that helps children ages 5-12 get outdoors to explore, play, learn about and take action for nature. We do this through an award-winning network of 24 nature clubs across BC. Together with our volunteer club leaders, nature mentors, and donors, we share the vision of building a healthy and sustainable future for our world by engaging every child and their family in the diversity, complexity and wonder of nature.

Job Description:

As the public face of NatureKids BC and the leader of our strategic and daily operations, the Executive Director is responsible for the organization’s consistent achievement of its vision, mission, plans and financial objectives. Working with creativity, resourcefulness, innovation and inspiration, the ED will lead our organization along the path to success, creating a generation of BC children who love nature and have the skills, knowledge and motivation to take action for nature.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership and Management

  • You enable NatureKids BC ‘s long-term success through positive and progressive leadership and organizational management. You demonstrate aligned values, good judgment, solid ethics and appropriate care and discretion in all your dealings;
  • Responsible for the day-to-day operation and management of the organization;
  • Responsible for the recruitment, employment, and release of all personnel, both paid staff and volunteers and responsible for developing staff and volunteer proficiency;
  • Foster a climate that attracts, and sustains a diverse staff of top quality people (both paid and volunteer) ensuring they have the resources and support to succeed;
  • Coach and motivate staff and volunteers and support emerging leaders to take on greater responsibility;
  • Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, provincial and local regulations and to support learning, continuity and growth;
  • Responsible for performance reviews with staff, accountability and development of work plans;
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field;
  • Foster and maintain a strong, sustainable and relevant organization;
  • Provide strategic guidance, timely reporting and support to the Board of Directors; and
  • Provide strategic guidance and support in the strategic planning process.

Fundraising and Revenue Development

  • Creative and fearless, you are responsible for the development and execution of a sustainable business plan that includes various revenue streams and fundraising strategies which together provide a stable financial foundation for the organization’s current programs and enable long-term planning and future growth;
  • Development, management and tracking of budgets and financial forecasting;
  • Planning and execution of fundraising strategies for various foundation grants, individual donations, corporate sponsorships and earned revenue;
  • Responsible for tracking internal and externally required performance indicators and generating grant reports; and
  • Develop and execute strategies to engage and cultivate donors.

Relationship Building and Communication

  • You enable NatureKids BC to consistently achieve more than our size and budget would suggest possible through an extensive network of relationships from members and donors to foundations and community volunteers;
  • Foster and maintain strong relationships with donors and external stakeholders;
  • Build awareness of NatureKids BC through various social media, digital and face-to-face strategies;
  • Represent the mission, values, and programs of the organization to agencies, organizations, and the general public;
  • Develop and maintain relationships with other non-profit leaders and look for partnerships and joint ventures that support both organizations; and
  • Work personally with leaders in the business and government arena, cultivating long-term strategic partnerships or donor relationships to increase organizational effectiveness.

Key Competencies and Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive leadership and Executive Director experience working in a non-profit or charitable organization as well as a university degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising including soliciting and closing individual gifts, online fundraising, foundation/government grants and corporate sponsorship;
  • Strong values that align with NatureKids BC’s mission, vision and values demonstrated through your work or community involvement to date;
  • Proven leadership and project management experience as well as demonstrated experience in networking and building stakeholder relationships;
  • Proven experience and expertise in planning, organizing, communications, partnership building, organizational policy and procedures, financial management/controls;
  • Strong computer literacy, digital and social media skills;
  • Excellent communication and negotiating skills; good judgment and discretion in dealing with confidential matters;
  • Experience working with a large base of volunteers;
  • The right attitude: you are a positive team player who thrives in a busy environment, is comfortable wearing many hats, promotes and embraces change and is highly functioning in a dynamic work environment;
  • Understanding and respect for individual work styles and adapt as required to effectively work with a variety of individuals;
  • A keen understanding and passion for the child and nature movement (essential);
  • Practical experience working with children and families and/or in the environmental education field;
  • Must have access to transportation and be willing to undergo a criminal records check.
