Come celebrate one of the world’s most punctual migrants and our smallest diving duck. The first Buffleheads typically return to our bays for the winter from Interior lakes right around the 297th day of the solar calendar….October 14th! We will be looking for Buffleheads and other seabirds and intertidal life, as well as doing some sketching at the beach guided by an artist from the Robert Bateman Centre.  The location of this event, Robert’s Bay, is near Sidney and is within the Shoal Harbour Migratory Bird Sanctuary.
The Details
WHEN:  Saturday, October 14th, 10:00-noon.
NOTE: All Buffleheads Day is part of a 3-day public event with hands-on exhibits and activities for families.  The public event at Robert’s Bay begins at 9:30 with a welcome by Chief Tanya Jones of the Tseycum First Nation, so feel free to arrive early!
WHERE: Roberts Bay, Ardwell Beach access in Sidney. 
Go to the end of Ardwell Avenue, just past where it intersects with Resthaven Drive.
Parking is along Resthaven Drive (or at the Sidney Library ~15 minute walk).
* Your nature sketchbook (if you have one from our summer sketching at Cole’s Bay)- we will provide if you don’t have one.
* Wear waterproof boots as there may be a bit of wading to cross Mermaid Creek on the beach.
* Binoculars could be handy if you have them.

Explorer Day Etiquette:

  • Be prepared to HAVE FUN!
  • Pre-registration with your Club Leader is required for most Explorer Days (Friends are welcome if space permits).
  • Please arrive 5-10 minutes before the scheduled start time to ensure enough time for passport stamping and organization. Starting times are firm, and Leaders cannot wait for late-comers!
  • Please stay with the Leader and let them know if you are leaving early.
  • Children must always be accompanied by an adult guardian, who is responsible for their behaviour. Children consistently disrupting the experience of others may be asked to leave.
  • Bring appropriate weather gear, sunscreen, snacks, water, and other useful tools like binoculars, sketch books, cameras, and magnifying glasses.
