Garry Oak Meadow Celebration
We have been invited by the Friends of Uplands Park (FOUP) to join in their 2019 Garry Oak Meadow Celebration at Uplands Park, in Victoria. This is our chance to engage in some local stewardship activities.  Let’s make a difference!
Together with the community, we will celebrate our local Garry Oak Ecosystems (GOE) and hone our stewardship skills by helping out with invasive removal at Uplands Park. Plants like English ivy and Himalayan blackberry threaten to take over other plants in this fragile ecosystem.
There will be music (Bald Eagles soft rock band), food, drinks, displays, activities, prizes and nature walks focusing on wildflowers and the Garry Oak Ecosystem (GOE) through Uplands Park. This park is probably the best example of the endangered GOE with 24 rare plants and also includes a rocky marine foreshore, Cattle Point.
We will meet up with Margaret Lidkea (the Chair of FOUP) first, who will guide us to our work area. We will work for about an hour pulling ivy/weeds and then join in the festivities.
This event is open to the public. Last year I believe about 300 people were in attendance.
WHEN: Sunday, April 28th, noon – 2 pm (the event runs until 3 pm so you are welcome to stay longer!)
WHERE: Meet in field on Beach Drive at the entrance to Cattle Point. I will have a big NatureKids sign with me to put up by our work area.
COME PREPARED: Don’t wear your favourite clothes! You will probably get dirty and sometimes it’s easy to snag clothes when you are in the thick of vegetation. Safety glasses are recommended if you have some, but not necessary.
As mentioned, gloves and tools will be provided.

Explorer Day Etiquette:

  • Be prepared to HAVE FUN!
  • Pre-registration with your Club Leader is required for most Explorer Days (Friends are welcome if space permits).
  • Please arrive 5-10 minutes before the scheduled start time to ensure enough time for passport stamping and organization. Starting times are firm, and Leaders cannot wait for late-comers!
  • Please stay with the Leader and let them know if you are leaving early.
  • Children must always be accompanied by an adult guardian, who is responsible for their behaviour. Children consistently disrupting the experience of others may be asked to leave.
  • Bring appropriate weather gear, sunscreen, snacks, water, and other useful tools like binoculars, sketch books, cameras, and magnifying glasses.
