Christmas Bird Count for Kids!
Some of you attended our September Explorer day at Rocky Point Bird Observatory, where we learned from our fantastic Nature Mentor Andrea, how to spot birds, use binoculars and pay attention to bird details like size, colour, and behaviour.   This is our chance to practice some of our skills as part of the Christmas Bird Count.  This is a citizen science project which has been going on in one form or another for over 100 years!
The data will be submitted to Bird Studies Canada (which collects data from CBC4Kids events across the country) and is also submitted to eBird.  More information on the scientific value of the Christmas Bird Count, can be found through this link:
Andrea will be our Nature Mentor for this Explorer Day activity and is the coordinator for the event.   She has some fun games in store, as well as some birding guides to share.   Hot chocolate and treats will be provided to keep us going!
Location:  Meet at Beckwith Park, Saanich. Free parking is located at 857 Beckwith Avenue.
Directions to Beckwith Park:
By car from Downtown Victoria: Go North on Blanshard St. (Pat Bay Highway #17) and take exit 9 for Quadra Street toward Saanich Road W,  Turn right onto Quadra St, Turn left onto Beckwith Ave, Turn right at Belvedere Rd and the destination will be on the left:  857 Beckwith Avenue.

What to bring:  Weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear, and binoculars if you have them (there will be some binoculars and a spotting scope there for us to check out!).

Explorer Day Etiquette:

  • Be prepared to HAVE FUN!
  • Pre-registration with your Club Leader is required for most Explorer Days (Friends are welcome if space permits).
  • Please arrive 5-10 minutes before the scheduled start time to ensure enough time for passport stamping and organization. Starting times are firm, and Leaders cannot wait for late-comers!
  • Please stay with the Leader and let them know if you are leaving early.
  • Children must always be accompanied by an adult guardian, who is responsible for their behaviour. Children consistently disrupting the experience of others may be asked to leave.
  • Bring appropriate weather gear, sunscreen, snacks, water, and other useful tools like binoculars, sketch books, cameras, and magnifying glasses.
