NORTH OKANAGAN

May 27, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm PDT

Wild Food Picnic
Bring a dish made from or containing a wild food from the Okanagan.

Location: Coldstream Park, below Coldstream Public School
Bring: your appetite and your own portable dishes.

When collecting wild edibles it’s important to remember a few things:
a) ensure your food actually is edible
b) we encourage collecting on private land
c) collect away from pathways and roadways to avoid contamination
d) forage like a deer – choose sporadically, never take more than 30% of a population and save the best looking ones for the insects and animals that rely on them

Some examples of foods include: garlic mustard dip, nettle lasagna, cattail root soup, dandelion and sheep sorrel leaves in salad, fried fiddleheads, roasted burdock and other root vegetables, wild fish, game meat, mint ice cream, candied violets, etc.

Explorer Day Etiquette:

  • Be prepared to HAVE FUN!
  • Pre-registration with your Club Leader is required for most Explorer Days (Friends are welcome if space permits).
  • Please arrive 5-10 minutes before the scheduled start time to ensure enough time for passport stamping and organization. Starting times are firm, and Leaders cannot wait for late-comers!
  • Please stay with the Leader and let them know if you are leaving early.
  • Children must always be accompanied by an adult guardian, who is responsible for their behaviour. Children consistently disrupting the experience of others may be asked to leave.
  • Bring appropriate weather gear, sunscreen, snacks, water, and other useful tools like binoculars, sketch books, cameras, and magnifying glasses.
