Building Wood Duck Nest Boxes and learning about Wood Ducks
Perhaps some of you know the wetland behind Oliver Woods park – in past years there have been a number of Wood Ducks that come there to nest. Urban Development has put a little pressure on these beautiful ducks, who only nest in holes in trees. Our club will be partnering with the City of Nanaimo to build 5 nest boxes and place them around the wetland for the Ducks to nest in. We will be building the boxes ourselves (if anyone has an extra drill they are willing to bring along to use, that would be much appreciated). I will send more information about that in the coming weeks.
We will also look around the wetland to see natural nesting sites and to learn a bit about Wood Ducks and other ducks that use this wetland. Why do the ducks come here and not other wetlands? What exactly do they need to find a good place to make a nest and raise babies?
If we have some extra time on our hands we will be playing some games in the woods by the park (if the kids can be tempted away from the playground).
If you are interested in participating please respond to the RSVP form ASAP. We might have to limit participation in building the boxes for safety reasons.
Location: Oliver Woods Community Centre

So Mark your Calendars for Sunday April 07 from 9 – 11AM ((I know this is not our usual time, but this is the only time available for us to use a room in Oliver Woods Centre to build our boxes).
And here is an adorable video of some Wood Duck ducklings leaving their nest – this is a ‘must watch’!

Explorer Day Etiquette:

  • Be prepared to HAVE FUN!
  • Pre-registration with your Club Leader is required for most Explorer Days (Friends are welcome if space permits).
  • Please arrive 5-10 minutes before the scheduled start time to ensure enough time for passport stamping and organization. Starting times are firm, and Leaders cannot wait for late-comers!
  • Please stay with the Leader and let them know if you are leaving early.
  • Children must always be accompanied by an adult guardian, who is responsible for their behaviour. Children consistently disrupting the experience of others may be asked to leave.
  • Bring appropriate weather gear, sunscreen, snacks, water, and other useful tools like binoculars, sketch books, cameras, and magnifying glasses.
